Breville Oracle Jet: Who Is the Oracle Jet Really For?

4 min read

The Oracle Jet handles grinding and tamping, but how much do you still do yourself? Here’s what to expect when making coffee, preparing milk and cleaning up.

What the machine does—and what you still do

Breville introduced the Oracle Jet in August 2024. It combines a grinder, a touchscreen and Breville’s ThermoJet heating system. It also measures the coffee and presses the grounds for you. The removable coffee handle, called a portafilter, is 58 mm across according to the manual. That is larger than on many smaller Breville machines, but size alone does not mean handles from other machines will fit.

You still move the coffee handle from the grinder to the brewing head, position the cup, empty the used grounds and look after the milk jug. For some people, that involvement is the attraction. If you would rather press a button and return to a finished milk drink, consider a fully automatic machine such as the Philips instead.

Run through your busiest morning before deciding

Imagine making two flat whites before leaving home. You prepare the coffee, brew it, steam the milk, clean the wand and repeat. WIRED’s independent review notes that the Jet cannot steam milk while brewing coffee. It heats quickly, but you still do those jobs separately.

For a solo drinker, moving between those steps may feel perfectly natural. If several people are waiting for lattes, think about whether you are happy making one drink at a time.

  • Check clearance above the hopper and access to the water tank where the machine will actually sit.
  • Read the manual’s milk-positioning and wand-cleaning instructions before relying on automatic texturing.
  • Allow space for the jug, a knock box and routine cleaning rather than measuring only the machine footprint.

What the automation can and cannot correct

Once the daily routine looks right, turn to the coffee itself. Grind guidance can help, but beans still change with age and roast style. Keep the coffee consistent while learning the machine; changing beans, grind, drink volume and milk together makes it difficult to tell what improved the cup.

Note the settings you like and taste the espresso before adding milk. Milk can soften coffee that tastes too sour or weak on its own. Our espresso troubleshooting guide can help you work out what to change; the screen’s suggestions are a starting point, not a guarantee of a great cup.

What to expect from the cold drinks

Breville offers cold espresso and cold-brew-style recipes on the Jet. These use cooler water, but they are not the same as soaking coffee grounds overnight. The method is different, so do not expect exactly the same flavour as a jug of homemade cold brew.

If iced drinks are the main reason for upgrading, compare the cold setting with a normal espresso poured over the same amount of ice. Melting ice weakens the coffee. Choose the drink you enjoy rather than assuming the cold setting will always taste better.

Ownership matters after the first week

You still need to clean the grinder, run the recommended cleaning cycles and follow Breville’s water guidance. Automatic milk steaming does not mean automatic cleanup. Wipe the wand and clear out leftover milk as the manual directs, empty the drip tray and use the recommended cleaning products.

An integrated grinder saves counter space but ties two important components to one appliance. Check local service arrangements, warranty terms and the price of routine consumables alongside the purchase price. Find out where the machine would go for repair and what support is available in your region.

Who should shortlist it—and who should not?

Consider the Jet if you want help with the fiddly parts but still enjoy making the coffee yourself. It is best suited to a few drinks at a time. Look elsewhere if you need to brew coffee and steam milk together, want a separate grinder, or would rather have the whole drink made at the touch of a button.

Before ordering, check the Oracle Jet’s features and support terms in your country, then picture that morning routine again. If having the coffee measured and pressed for you removes the frustrating part—and making coffee and milk separately suits your household—the Jet belongs on your shortlist.
